The Guardian of Why

So ‘um, what happened to January?

Seems like a day ago it was New Year’s Eve and now-bam- it’s nearly the end of the month.  It’s not like I’ve been slacking either.  In fact, just last week the TiE2013 Technology in Education Conference I’ve been organizing since last September happened and was a roaring success.  At least that was the qualitative evaluations, gathered during the conference, attended by 250 educators and administrators, 10 vendors and 2 keynote speakers. Our quantitative evaluations go out this week….another item on the extensive To-Do list, along with the formal De-Briefing Meeting.  But more on that further down.

“Been a little busy”, is all that seems to have come out of my mouth since the holidays.  Anyone who has organized an event [from full-on wedding to baby shower to super bowl party to large scale event] recognizes these words spilling out of their mouths.  So, is being too busy an excuse for not getting other things done? Well, sometimes it actually is. Sometimes you have to hunker-down, focus on the prize and push on thru to the other side. Friends and family have to understand, homes get a little cluttered and you know you will be able to circle back-later, after the event or busy-ness, regroup and pull things together again.

And other times, it’s merely a matter of: setting goals, carefully planning your time [often down to the minute], calling in support, and relaxing into the project or event.  Whoa, wait a minute! Did I just say relax, while on a deadline?  Why yes I did, ‘why’ being the key word here.

When we know ‘why’ we are doing what we are doing….well, ‘the doing’ [i.e. the how and what] becomes much easier. Sure, we can ‘do’ what needs to be done.  However, understanding the ‘why’ and being the guardian of the why, helps propel us into our ‘how’s and what’s’. The ‘Why’ becomes our guide.

And let me tell you, knowing ‘why’ you are doing something really does help.  That’s one of the primary reasons I created The B Calendar.  Each day, gives you a word, a direction, a guide to ‘why’ in becoming an even better you. When you have the clarity of knowing why you are doing what you are doing, it helps raise your self-esteem and brings vision to the what’s and how’s that you are doing.

Sure, we wanted to create a profit for our TiE2013 Conference.  However, the larger ‘why’ involved going thru all the thousands of what’s and how’s tasks and details in order to help teachers and administrators understand why it is important.  Why all students, at all levels,  can and need to use technology to promote their learning. Of course, we had tons of workshops explaining what technologies to use and how to use them….but primarily, we were hoping to get across this more important reason ‘why’.

New Beginnings Are In The Little Things

Ah, the New Year….always a great space and a great place to set down goals.  Stake your place in the world and claim what you are going to accomplish.  Boom.  And then come the days of need to actually work at those resolutions, those goals and all the little steps needed to achieve your goals. Depending upon your goals, odds are you might fall off the preverbal goal wagon as early as today.

In order to increase your inspiration, I suggest creating small manageable steps for each of your goals.  Then next to each of the smaller steps make a tiny notation of how long you predict it will take to achieve that step.  Once you know the amount of time a step will take- you can align the step with the time you have to achieve the task. And once you start achieving your steps and goals, you will be inspired to do more.

I also suggest you take a little time and watch a few of these TED Talks to inspire you in achieving your New Year’s resolutions.

Watch this and once you have finished see if you can use just 2 minutes to increase your confidence and feel less stressed.

Define Your Day

Each morning sees some task begin.

Each evening sees it close.

Something attempted, something done.

Has earned a night’s repose.


If you could only get one thing done today, what would be most satisfying?  B Calendar’s daily word reminds you that defining your day will bring you closer to satisfaction.

Because once you have defined your day, you are more likely to get things done-accomplish tasks. So, everyday ask yourself:

  • If I could only get one task done today, what would be most satisfying?
Then make sure you carve out some time today to act on that task. 15 minutes, half an hour, all day or more time if needed.  It doesn’t matter how long you focus on the task, it matters that you have focused your energy.
There is no such thing as trying, if you try you are doing.

Take Action

I’ve been following Marie Forleo for some time and really love Tuesday mornings as I get inspired by her actions.  Today it was especially sweet as Marie interviewed Chris Guillebeau and was able to pull some gems quotes from Chris, like this one: The choices we make now affect the opportunities available to us in the future.  Great stuff.

3 Items To-Do a Day

An easy way to fill your Daily To-Do List is to have only 3 items. You will stand a better chance of actually completing your To-Do List when there are only 3 items on it. It might sound like something your mother would tell you, but she was right.

Create Your To-Do List:

  1. List your 3 top to-do items for the day.
  2. Leave this someplace you can see.
  3. Add notes as you move throughout the day.

Why Create a To-Do List:

  1. Use your To-Do List as a guide for your daily tasks.
  2. Reduce stress by prioritizing [always do the most difficult tasks during the time of day you have the most energy].
  3. Add images, sketches, and notes to create more meaning for your list.

How to Use Your To-Do List:

  1. Create your To-Do List the night before.
  2. Do not be afraid to modify your list.
  3. Cross off items and celebrate their completion.
